The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis
Please answer each question in a separate post.
Compare your life with Parvana's. Discuss things that are the same and things that are different as far as things like daily activities, school and education, local surroundings, clothing, relationships, politics, etc.
Some characters in the book are in a personal conflict between wanting a new lifestyle or a different place and their sense of duty and commitment to their family or country. Pick one of these characters and discuss this personal conflict and how she deals with it. What does she desire and why does she desire it? Where does her commitment lie and why? What choice or choices does she make?

Since Parvana was a girl, she could no longer go outside without her father. She could not go to school, and many girls had to cover their faces when they did go outside. It was one far of country that ruled her land. People were arrested if they had books, espically if it was a religious bible. In order to have enough money, the man of the family had to collect and sell many of the family's prized possetions.
I choose Parvana as my character. Parvana is torn between staying with her family to help them stay alive, or by leaving her family so she would be safe. She would also be able to make friends and have a good education. Parvana stayed beacause she believed that her father would come home, after he had been taken away by soliders.
Parvana knows she can not go out in public, for she is a girl. But her mother thinks of an idea. They will cut her hair and wear her brothers old clothes. That way she can by food and also sell many items as well. When she meets one of her old friends who decided to stay behind as well, they decide to sell gum, cigarrets and other little things to make money. But they teaboys know a better way to make lots of money. The can go bone digging. For every bone they find, the bone-weigher pricer them out. Then he buys the bones from them to sell. They can be used for many things: cooking, medicine etc. Her commitment lies with her family because she knows they her to help get food and money.
